Welcome to all of our Devils 14U Black Families and Players,

Now that summer has come to an end and you have all had the chance to get together and know each other, it is time to take it to the ICE!

I am very excited about our upcoming 22-23 season with new teams, coaches and players!
Coming off of 2 COVID seasons, I can only expect that this year will be a very good one for all, as I hope everyone is as excited as I am to be back to a “normal” season of hockey again.  The players truly deserve that!
With that said, I want to point out to all of our South Coast Hockey League families, that the league this year will be paying very close attention to behavior and discipline.  The SOUTH COAST LEAGUE has established a very hard and fast ZERO TOLERANCE policy which I feel is very important to share with you so everyone is well aware of any consequences which may be imposed.
Now onto the GOOD STUFF!

PARITY
You will start the season with PARITY games as you have seen on your schedule. These games are HALF HOUR games to help to determine the team’s best level placement in the league.  Please see below for a very detailed explanation of what PARITY is and why the SCHL league does it.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE PARITY SEASON
The South Coast Hockey League will be hosting their annual Parity Season between September 9 - September 18. The parity season allows the SCHL to evaluate whether teams have been placed in the proper divisions, and adjust as necessary - limiting the amount of lopsided scores throughout the season. Each team will play between three and six 30-minute run time games giving teams a chance to play more opponents over the course of the short parity season.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the parity season and why do we do it?
  • The parity season is a series of preseason games that has two goals: (1) confirm that all teams have been placed in the proper division. If it is clear a team does not belong in a division, the league will move them up or down. (2) allows teams to knock the rust off before regular season play starts.

Do the games count towards regular season standings?
  • The parity games do not count towards regular season standings.

Who determines which teams move divisions?
  • The SCHL has created a Competition Committee comprised of one representative from each member program. The Competition Committee will review the results of each game, discuss, and vote on which teams need to move divisions.

Why are the games only 30-minutes?
  • We adopted the abbreviated game format for parity to help maximize the amount of opponents each team can play in the short preseason.

Will our regular season games be the same 30-minute format?
  • No, regular season games will use the standard 3 period system (2 halves for U18). Exact rules for each division can be found on the SCHL website.

SCHL Selects is a tournament team made up of the top talent in the South Coast Hockey League. With a team at each birth year, SCHL Selects provides the best players in the league with an opportunity to play a higher level of hockey at an affordable price, while continuing to play for their regular SCHL team.
We are excited to showcase the talent we have in the SCHL and help our players learn, grow, and play the game of hockey, all while validating that town teams can compete with AA teams across the region.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Who is eligible to tryout?
    • Any player currently rostered on only an SCHL team is eligible to tryout. It doesn't matter if you are on an A, B, or C team, we want to see you at tryouts! Dual rostered players that play on other AAA/AA teams are ineligible. One team per birth year: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013
  • If I make an SCHL Selects team do I stop playing for my full-season team?
    • No! The SCHL Selects season will be supplemental to your full-season SCHL team. You will play on both teams, and if a conflict arises where your SCHL team has a game at the same time as a Selects game, you will have to play in your regular season SCHL game.
  • How many games do the Selects teams play and will there be practices?
    • Each Selects team will play a minimum of 10 games - in tournaments or against AA teams across New England. Practices are not mandatory but can be scheduled on a per team basis.
  • How much does it cost?
    • The tryout fee is $30. If you are selected for the team, the tuition will be $300. Tuition will cover tournament fees, and ice costs. If a team has two goalies, each will pay half tuition. Uniforms are an additional fee (~$70) and the players can keep at the end of the season. If you already have an SCHL Selects jersey, you do not need to buy a new one.
    • Players that are selected to join the team as alternates do not have to pay tuition, but they will need to buy a uniform.
  • When are tryouts?
    • Tryouts will be held on September 24th and 25th at Levy Ice Rink.
  • How will tryouts work?
    • The players will be run through a series of skill drills. They will then be divided into two teams and will scrimmage for the remainder of the session. SCHL has hired a small group of independent evaluators made up of former professional and college players to decide which players will make the team.
    • After the first tryout, SCHL will release a list of players that have been invited to the Call Back tryout. This smaller pool of players will be split into two teams for a scrimmage. The final team will be decided from the Call Back tryout.
  • How many players will make the team?
    • Each team will consist of 17 players - 9 forwards, 6 defenseman, 2 goalies.
    • Each team will have 6 alternates - 3 forwards, 2 defenseman, 1 goalie.
  • Schedule
    • Minimum of 10 games against AA teams in New England and tournaments.

SCHL ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY
In regards to the new discipline rules, please see below and please be aware of the severe consequences being imposed by the South Coast Hockey League.
The South Coast Hockey League was founded on the principles of providing a safe and enjoyable atmosphere where players, coaches, officials, and spectators are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and play the game of hockey. Spectators are expected to be a positive role model by treating all players, coaches, officials and fellow spectators with respect and support. In conjunction with USA Hockey's Zero Tolerance Policy and Code of Conduct, the SCHL is implementing a supplemental Zero Tolerance Policy. If parents or spectators display inappropriate and disruptive behavior interfering with other spectators or the game, they will be subject to the following punishments:
  • 1st Offense: $500 fine to the affiliated program and the offender is suspended from one (1) SCHL game
  • 2nd Offense: $1,000 fine to the affiliated program and the offender is suspended from three (3) SCHL games
  • 3rd Offense: $2,000 fine to the affiliated program, the team will forfeit the game in question, and offender will be suspended from five (5) SCHL games
  • 4th Offense: $3,000 fine to the affiliated program, team will not be eligible for playoffs, and offending will be suspended from ten (10) SCHL games
  • 5th Offense: $5,000 fine to the affiliated program, the player will be banned from competing in the SCHL, and the offender is banned from all SCHL events
ALL OF THE ABOVE IMPOSED FINES WILL BE PASSED ALONG TO THE OFFENDER
Inappropriate and disruptive behavior includes but is not limited to:
  • Use of obscene, profane, or abusive language to anyone at any time.
  • Taunting of players, coaches, officials or other spectators by means of baiting, ridiculing, threat of physical violence or physical violence.
  • Throwing of any object in the spectators viewing area, players bench, penalty box or on ice surface, directed in any manner as to create a safety hazard.
All incidents will be investigated and reviewed by the SCHL Disciplinary Committee and respective USA Hockey affiliates.
*All discipline actions will be taken after a hearing with the appropriate discipline authority as defined by USA Hockey. Hearings will follow the rules and procedures spelled out in USA Hockey Bylaws Chapter 10. Offenders can waive their opportunity for a hearing.

I want to wish the Devils U14 Black Team a successful season where the players have FUN and develop.  I hope that we can all work together to make that happen.
GOOD LUCK and GO DEVILS!!!
